Orthokeratology
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K Contact Lenses for Myopia Correction and Management)
What is Orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology uses a contact lens that works while you sleep. It is safe, 100% reversible and the perfect alternative to laser surgery, spectacles and daily contact lens wear.
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is a vision correction treatment using specially designed contact lenses worn overnight. While you sleep, the lenses gently reshape the front surface of your eye, altering how light focuses on the retina. This means you can enjoy clear vision during the day without glasses or contact lenses.
Research shows that Ortho-K can also slow the progression of myopia, making it an excellent option for children who are short-sighted or whose prescriptions are increasing.
The cornea (the clear part at the front of your eye) plays a key part in achieving good vision. During sleep, EyeDream lenses use the pressure of your closed eyelids to gently reshape the cornea. When the lenses are removed, the slight flattening that EyeDream creates – less than the width of a human hair – is enough to give you crisp, clear unaided vision all day

Patient Journey
Rest assured, you are in safe hands – all EyeDream opticians have undergone special training. Here is the typical journey a patient will experience when being fitted with EyeDream.
This involves a comprehensive check-up on the health of the front of your eyes, an evaluation of your prescription, a corneal topography scan and the determination of lens parameters.
At this appointment, you will be given everything that is needed to get started with EyeDream.
We will insert your lenses and check that they are suitable for the first night of wear.
You will also be given instructions on how to insert, remove and care for your lenses.
At the end of this visit, you will take away your lenses and solution ready for your first night of wear.
Now for the exciting bit! This appointment will be carried out early in the morning after your first night of wear. You will remove your lenses at home and come in so that we can establish the effect of EyeDream on your vision.
Patients who originally had higher levels of myopia may need a residual correction. In such cases, we will arrange for you to wear lenses during the early period of change.
At all aftercare visits, we will measure your corneal topography to establish the effect of the lenses on corneal shape. We will also carry out an extensive assessment of your corneal health to ensure that the lenses are not having an adverse effect on your eyes.
This appointment is usually conducted after 5 to 7 nights of wear. It is very similar to the first aftercare visit.
At this stage, we will assess the progression of the change in your vision to ensure that everything is on track for a great result.
If at any point in the early stages of treatment the measurements suggest that a change of lens is required, this is done at no extra charge.
This is usually carried out after 10 to 14 nights of wear. At this stage, you should have reached full correction.
All of the assessments from the previous aftercare are repeated to establish the final result. You are now ready to carry on wearing your EyeDream lenses.
It may be necessary to see you more often during the early stages of treatment, particularly if we need to change either of the lenses to optimise the result.
You need to come in for an aftercare 3 months after your initial fit, again 6 months after the initial fit and then every 6 months after that to ensure everything is going well and that your eyes stay healthy.
Patients considering orthokeratology would require an up-to-date private advanced eye examination, including Medmont Meridia corneal topography and diagnostics before the fitting appointment is carried out.
