Specialist Glaucoma Screening Service
We are accredited to provide the Black Country Glaucoma Enhanced Referral Service, a specialist NHS service that allows patients with suspected glaucoma to receive advanced assessment within our practice.
If you attend our clinic and we identify signs that could suggest glaucoma, your referral is managed internally within our clinic first — and if glaucoma is suspected or confirmed, we refer you directly to the hospital eye service.
What happens if glaucoma is suspected?
If concerns are identified during your eye examination, we will arrange a specialist glaucoma assessment within our clinic under the Glaucoma Enhanced Referral Service.
This enhanced appointment helps us decide whether:
- Glaucoma is unlikely and no further action is needed
- Monitoring within the community is appropriate
- A hospital eye clinic referral is required for diagnosis or treatment
Where hospital care is needed, we ensure your referral is accurate, timely, and clinically appropriate.
All of our optometrists hold the Professional Certificate in Glaucoma and are fully accredited to provide this service, which is not available at all opticians.
Your assessment may include:
- Detailed eye pressure measurements
- Advanced retinal imaging and scans of the optic nerve
- Dilated assessment of the optic nerve
- Visual field testing
- A clear explanation of your results and next steps
This process ensures that hospital eye clinics receive well-refined referrals, helping patients be seen faster when treatment is needed.
A Specialist Service
Not all optometry practices are accredited to provide the Black Country Glaucoma Enhanced Referral Service.
If your usual optician is not accredited, they may refer you to us so you can still access this specialist assessment locally before any hospital referral is made.
After your appointment, we will:
- Explain your results in clear, simple terms
- Reassure you if glaucoma is not present
- Continue monitoring where appropriate
- Refer you directly to the hospital eye service if glaucoma is suspected or confirmed
Our aim is to make sure every patient receives the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
